Vintage Moroccan Guigou Carpet GG20

A vintage carpet from the Guigou valley, a sub tribe of the Beni M’Guild, featuring a large scale ornate chevron pattern filled with Berber symbolism including lozenges, H-forms, triangles, and bars. The motifs appear etched into the abrashed field, creating a sense of layering and depth. The striking palette includes scarlet red, orange, magenta, violet, indigo, dark brown, and faded sky blue. Asymmetrical side borders frame the piece. Note a few areas of repair are present. 100% wool with a dense pile and beautiful patina.

Guigou

This Middle Atlas Berber tribe produces a rustic variety of carpets using natural dyes. Some show signs of an oriental influence, perhaps due to the weavers viewing examples traded at Souks from nearby urban centers, where carpets from the eastern islamic regions are more heavily used. The blending of the Berber tradition and oriental color stories creates a beautiful combination.
