Vintage Moroccan Boujad Carpet BJ26

This lively Moroccan Boujad displays a colorful abstract composition. A large meandering vertical lozenge chain fills most of the field, creating a sense of movement. Male zig zag motifs form borders along both selvedges. Knotted in a vibrant palette of orange, red, celadon green, lavender, pale yellow and ivory on a multicolored warp. 100% wool.

An Arab urban center with both Arab and Arabized Berber tribes in the Haouz plains region east of Marrakech (between the Middle Atlas and Atlantic Ocean) named after the town of Boujad, which has an important carpet souk. Carpets from this region have similarities to those from the Middle Atlas, utilizing Berber motifs and similar structures, but tend to take on a more individualistic creative approach. Motifs are often distorted, and vast colors reflect an urban influence. These carpets can vary from an abstract side of weaving art to more precise symmetrical messages. Boujad carpets were not made for bedding but rather for use on the floor.
