Boucherouite

A common utilitarian rug made in all regions of Morocco woven of recycled cloth, most often cotton clothing and other various fibers. Some of the patterns are more extreme while others take on a more traditional look. Many of the more elaborate colorful examples play a specific role in the Berber home. The Berbers are innately superstitious, and feel wild patterns and vibrant colors can help ward off negative energy and evil spirits. Many Boucherouites can be found in the entryways of homes throughout the region. It is believed that the bright colors and striking patterns confuse the evil eye and prevent the home from taking in unwanted guests.
